2011 Mission

2011 MissionThe 29 member UCS mission team was in Uganda from Feb 25 to March 26, 2011.

The construction team built 2 schools. An elementary school in Banga, Mukono District which serves 160 children, and Henry's Hands, a vocational school in Mukono that will teach carpentry skills beginning in the spring of 2012. The Uganda Leadership Team of UCS is busy putting the finishing touches on the building, purchasing and installing the tools and equipment, and recruiting the staff for the school.

2011 MissionThe medical/dental/eye team held a total of 13 clinic days in 8 rural locations, treating over 4,000 persons. Patients were blessed by the physical treatment of their bodies, as well as receiving prayer from the UCS pastoral team. Several children and adults were referred for more complicated care at local hospitals, which was financed by UCS donors. We have received many praise reports following the treatments, a girl with webbed hands now has 10 fingers, a hydrocephalic infant had a shunt successfully inserted into his brain, a crippled teen received a custom made wheelchair, a diabetic 17 yr old girl was started on insulin and taught how to care for her diabetes, a 4 year old orphan being raised by his grandmother had surgery for congenital glaucoma that preserved some of his vision, many had successful surgeries, physical therapy, and IV antibiotic treatment for infections. Several hundred pairs of eyeglasses were distributed after eye exams were completed. Dental extractions provided relief from the pain a rotten tooth brings.

While the medical/dental/eye team was seeing patients, the UCS children's ministry team was kept busy providing a vacation Bible school program for the hundreds of children who were waiting to be seen. The teachers were also learners, being taught Christian songs in Lugandan by the children. A great time was had by all.

The March 2011 team purchased a plaque that was presented to the Mt. Olives Church
in honor of Rev. Walter and Peggy Patton.  The Plaque was inscribed with the following;

Dedicated In Honor
of
Rev. Walter and Peggy Patton
of Glassport, Pennsylvania USA.

Their love for Jesus and Walter's philosophy,
"A little bit multiplied by a lot, equals a lot."
has made the Mt Olives Project possible.

Karen’s Wells

Karen WellsThis program is named after a volunteer, Karen Hazlett, who was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Brackenridge, PA.  Karen felt a deep calling by God to have wells drilled that would supply local villagers with clean water.  She started several fundraising efforts, including the sale of homemade candy.

Unfortunately, Karen died before the first well was drilled.  UCS has made a commitment to carry out her mission of having the wells drilled and we have named the program in her honor.  The approximate cost to drill a well is $3,500 and any funds donated would be greatly appreciated.

The Karen's Wells project had 5 bore hole wells for fresh water dug and dedicated. Funds for the wells were donated by:

  • The Heckman Family, USA (donated one well)
  • Level Green Presbyterian Church, Trafford PA (donated two wells)
  • Carr Sunday School Class, USA and Jackson United Methodist Church, Jackson Georgia USA (Two donated - Donated in memory of WALTER ZANT)

A plaque has been installed at each of the well sites with this inscription:

CrossJesus said, "Whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst;
but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting
life. "

John 4:14

The Grace and Peace of the Lord Jesus be with you.

UCS Sudan Orphans' Kitchen Fund

The United Methodist Church in Yei had taken in and was caring forUganda Christian Solutions 487 war orphans.  In 2005, Nancy personally donated the seed money to purchase 25 acres of land to build a school and orphanage for these children.  The Dar Es Salaam elementary school currently has about 1,000 students, about 40% of which are orphans.

Currently, if UCS can raise the funds to build a kitchen that meets health codes at the school, then the Sudan government has promised a Children’s Food program.

To accomplish this goal. UCS is working with UMCOR (United Methodist Committee on Relief).   UMCOR will perform the actual construction on site.

 Such a food program would alleviate some of the cost for parents and ensure that local children receive a good meal daily.  So far $10,000 has been raised towards the $60,000 goal.

USC Education Fund

The Ugandan government provides free education for children through elementary school.  Even though the lessons are free, the children still need uniforms, shoes, lunch, and school supplies.

It is typical for an Ugandan family to make less than $500 US each year, making any educational costs very difficult to manage.  There are opportunities for education, but help is needed to manage the costs, as every level above elementary school requires tuition.

Through the UCS Education Fund, people have the opportunity to sponsor a student, either in helping provide the supplies needed or in assisting with tuition.  These scholarships can change a life.

Currently, UCS members are sponsoring two university students, a high school student, three seminary students, one trade school student, and four elementary school students.
